A snapshot of COPD-related clinical trials with an Australian connection – some still recruiting, others closed or completed. Always check the trial's own registry page for the current status before making contact.
Trial registries
These trials are drawn from the two public registries that cover Australia: ClinicalTrials.gov and the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ANZCTR). We've included closed and completed studies as well as open ones, since past trials can still be useful reading if you're weighing up whether research is right for you. This isn't a complete list, isn't an endorsement of any study, and isn't a substitute for advice from your own doctor.
An early-phase study looking at whether an infusion of small mobile stem cells is safe and tolerable for people with COPD. Running at two Melbourne sites (Veritus Research, Bayswater; Doherty Clinical Trials, Melbourne).
View on ClinicalTrials.gov ↗A cluster randomised trial testing a tailored self-management program, delivered by practice nurses, for COPD patients with other chronic conditions – run across dozens of general practices around Australia.
View on ANZCTR ↗A large international Phase 3 trial of astegolimab, an anti-ST2 antibody, for people with frequent COPD exacerbations, including a site in Midland, South Australia. Topline results were reported in 2025.
View on ClinicalTrials.gov ↗A completed year-long Boehringer Ingelheim trial of tiotropium delivered via the Respimat inhaler, run across ten Australian sites from Glebe to Nedlands, alongside sites overseas.
View on ClinicalTrials.gov ↗An Australian pilot safety study of inhaled mannitol to help clear mucus during acute COPD exacerbations. Listed here as an example of a trial that didn't reach its recruitment target – a reminder that not every registered study runs to completion.
View on ClinicalTrials.gov ↗A completed cluster randomised trial across South Western Sydney general practices, testing whether a nurse working alongside GPs improved guideline-based COPD care and patient outcomes.
